Seamless, an original and highly entertaining double bill featuring Touch Compass and Tasmanian integrated company Second Echo.

Inspiring, enriching and enabling participation,

Seamless is social change on the stage.

Two shows:

4.00 pm Saturday 20th October

6.00 pm Sunday 21st October

Q Theatre, 305 Queen Street, Auckland

Book at Ticketek http://premier.ticketek.co.nz/shows/Show.aspx?sh=SEAMLESS12

Heartfelt and enriching, celebrating relationships as they begin, develop and continue, The Company I Keep by Tasmania’s Second Echo Ensemble takes the audience on a journey through the sensations and emotions that we share when we dress for a first date, prepare for a party, argue with parents or simply share a quiet moment with someone we care about.

This innovative work, using dance, gesture and voice was initiated by Australian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, and was devised in collaboration with a team comprising both disabled and non-disabled performers.

The Ensemble joins forces with Touch Compass, New Zealand’s leading integrated dance company, to present a double-bill entitled Seamless at the upcoming Tempo Dance Festival at Auckland’s Q Theatre.

Touch Compass will perform their extraordinary and compelling new work Spring! that was created by Artistic Director, Catherine Chappell for their recent 15th Anniversary season.

Spring! builds slowly opening with an art installation, before moving to spectacular and engaging double bungee duets performed at multiple elevations.

Moments of daring and delicacy evolve as the dancers navigate their way through the multi-dimensional space, soaring, springing and spiralling.

Mesmerizing and immensely satisfying to watch Spring! is a highly technical and demanding work where the tenderness of intimacy is juxtaposed with quirky.

Intimate moments also abound in The Company I Keep with an original video-performance providing opportunities for the “live” performers to interact with the screen action.

Internationally acclaimed playwright Kruckemeyer, has been awarded the 2012 Sydney Myer Creative Fellowship, and has had over 50 works commissioned and performed worldwide.

Catherine Chappell received the Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellowship in 2011, and Spring dancer Sarah Houbolt, who is also a circus performer, was recently awarded Arts Access Aotearoa’s 2012 Big A Artistic Achievement Award.

‘Dance beyond difference’ is the catch-cry of Touch Compass, a contemporary dance company that include dancers with and without disability. Touch Compass has won national and international acclaim for their ground-breaking performances. Expect aerial bungee work, songs, visual spectacle, beautiful intimate stories, and an exploration of the place between falling and flying.

Here are the three pieces:

Run by international choreographer Marc Brew is a hard-edged work evoking desperation and escape that presents the idea of moving forward in our lives from the habits and histories that hold us back and restrict our growth.

Carol Brown’s piece Slip premiered at the Auckland Town Hall in August 2010 and toured to Wellington and Hastings in June 2011, and also received the NZ Listener 2010 ‘Touchstone Award’ which described the work as “remarkable”. This will be Slip’s third season and a rare opportunity to evolve this highly popular work that exposes intimacy and support and the personal stories of the dancers.

Spring, by Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellowship recipient Catherine Chappell, is a pioneering dance piece that combines aerial bungee and contact improvisation. Highly visual with elements of spectacle it explores gravity and energetic connection, as the dancers play with the movement created by the loft of the bungee.
